Grand Historic (1887) Residence Renovated for Contemporary
Grand Historic (1887) Residence Renovated for Contemporary Living
Around 1887, a local magistrate who owned one of the first Stock and Station supplies in Yass built the residence at 36 Grampian Street known as 'Wadden Lodge'. The house is complemented by its position as part of a line of similarly aged residences.

This elegant home has a nature filled outlook across to picturesque trees of the local high school grounds and spectacular Yass River rock face. The home is a short walk to the Yass town area, tennis courts and swimming pool and offers easy access to the network of walking paths that lead along the river.

The house is double brick and its 12 foot high wooden ceilings are a feature. Floors are beautiful 6-inch tongue and groove West Australia Karri. The roof frame structure is WA Jarrah. Floors at the rear of the house are Cypress Pine. Other original features include door locks made by H. & T. VAUGHAN in WILLENHALL England in the late 1800's with brass inlays and decorative brass handles. Four open fireplaces are operational though presently capped.

The 4 bedrooms are very large in addition to the study or fifth bedroom. A formal lounge with bay window and seat, a sunroom and separate formal dining room are joined by a spacious connecting hall. The kitchen and main bathroom have been renovated and the home is freshly painted. A magnificent wisteria runs along the east boundary. Years ago, the original owner trained the vine’s trunk to create a retaining wall at the front boundary. Lilac and wisteria put on a magnificent display along the veranda every spring. The veranda deck is rough cut iron wood, rarely seen now days.

The 'boys room' was originally used by the house-maid who scratched her name on the glass window and dated it 1898. A vacant block on the western side and another at the rear provide privacy and a sense of space. There is a chicken run, the old stable, wood shed, and small tool shed.
